The Selection Saturday event at Harlem School of the Arts was a huge success! At Selection Saturday, UpStaged celebrated African-American performing arts, featuring incredible performances from New York Poet Laureate Kayden Hern, defending NCPA Step champions Tufts Blackout, Harlem School of the Arts dancers, and singer Sarafina Belafonte.
The event also highlighted the art form of step and its historical and cultural significance to African art. Ed Nelson, a legendary step performer and founder of Players Club Entertainment, taught a step class to the audience and gave a powerful speech on the history of step.
In the afternoon, the brackets for the NCPA and NHSPA championships were unveiled, revealing the talented step teams that would be competing against each other in the high school and college step divisions.
